National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad is India’s premier design institute. One of the pioneering industrial design education institutions after Bauhaus and Hfg Ulm in Germany. NID has been declared ‘Institution of National Importance’ by the Act of Parliament under the National Institute of Design Act 2014.

The need for an institute of industrial design was felt in the 1950s to further the path of rapid industrialisation undertaken by India. The Government of India, with the help of Gautam and Gira Sarabhai, and the Ford Foundation, conceptualised the building of NID.

The American designers Charles and Ray Eames made recommendations to the Government of India in their India Report 1958 which informed the vision of NID. The institute was founded in 1961 and its building designed by Gira and Gautam Sarabhai is an icon of modern architecture was completed in 1964-65. The heritage campus is located near Sardar Bridge and the Sabarmati River, in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad. Two satellite campuses in, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru, have been added in recent decades.

The NID campus at Paldi is architecturally interesting with an open building plan with the exposed brick-and-concrete facade typical of the modernist architecture of Ahmedabad. The building is designed on a modular grid and two levels of studios, workshops and labs sit on columns over the largely open ground floor. Plenty of natural light is let in by open courtyards and light wells, enhancing the pleasantness of the building.

The campus is lush green with an abundance of trees that provide a habitat for peacocks, kites and several migratory birds. An old tomb has been imaginatively used as the backdrop of an amphitheatre.

A Guided Tour of Campus is organised for specially interested groups on prior appointment. NIDUS is the inhouse design store of NID which sells design publications, ceramics, accessories, apparel, bamboo and stainless steel items and various products by NID graduates. There are also exhibition galleries where events and exhibitions open to the public are held from time to time.
