This Hindu temple gets its name from the black marble statue of Rama.

The Kala Ramji Mandir is said to date from medieval times. It is part of a building that has residential areas. Some of the occupants are from the lineage that has been taking care of this temple from generations.

This temple lies at the back of Haja Patel ni Pol. The façade is worth seeing for some of the fine carvings on brackets and columns. The entrance leads to a courtyard where you can see some carved woodwork.

The fluted columns are crowned by capitals that hold carvings of musicians and dancers. Peacocks and other fauna are part of the frieze on the wall above the columns.

Continue through the courtyard to the main shrine where devotees worship the marble image of Lord Rama, depicted here with Sita and Hanuman.

MOST POPULAR ATTRACTION

What’s unusual about their sculptures is that they are carved in a seated position and are made out of a precious black stone called kasoti. Legend has it that a pious man, named Hariprasad, found these sculptures buried in the ground.
