Fernandes Bridge was built by the British and is said to have got its name from the British engineer who built it though some say it is named after a Christian priest. The bridge spans over Tankshal Road which lies several meters below Gandhi Road because it was once a creek.
Today, this bridge is a landmark because of the huge book market underneath. This market is best known for educational books and other publications, stationery and used books.
The Manek Nadi, a stream or river creek connected to the Sabarmati, once flowed through the walled city. The Fernandes Bridge was constructed across the old dried-up water feature in 1884 AD. You can see that the market is several meters below the Gandhi Road.Take the stairs down from Gandhi Road to Tankshal Road, and then to the book market. You can see some of the foundations of the old bridge.
This market throngs with people who come to buy educational books, text books, reference books, used books, publications, best-sellers, novels, religious books, stationery and much more. Collectors could get lucky in finding first editions and rare books in the market.
