The Ahmedabad Stockbroker’s Association was once housed in a grand building called the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange. Though the Stock Exchange has moved from here, the building is worth seeing for its attractive façade with neo-classical architectural features and Indian decorative elements.
Ahmedabad was a booming centre of the textile mills during the late 19th and early 20th century. This led to starting of a stock exchange in 1894, one of the oldest in the country. In 1894, the stock exchange was established as Public Charitable Trust followed by the establishment of the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1875.
Before that the stock exchange was functioned under the framework of the Bombay Securities Contracts Act, 1925.
Adopting The Securities Contract Regulations Act, 1956 the Gujarat Share & Stock Exchange, Indian Share and General Exchange Association and Bombay Share and Stock Exchange, Share and Stock Brokers Association merged with the Ahmedabad Share and Stock Brokers Association and gave rise to Ahmedabad Stock Exchange as it stands today.
The building was erected in 1919 and functioned as the stock exchange till it was moved to Kamdhenu Complex at Panjarapol in the 1990s.
The building presents an impressive European style façade with florid decorations. The classical style is visible even in the jharoka-style balconies. Art Deco elements can be seen in the later extensions to the building.
The building faces Mahurat Pol, one of Ahmedabad’s oldest pols.
Surrounded by three historical sites of Rani no Haziro, Jama Masjid and Badshah no Haziro, the building is recognisable by the ornate carvings in Dhrangadhra sandstone.
