Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium (S.P. Stadium)

Sardar Patel Stadium in Navrangpura is an interesting specimen of architecture by Charles Correa with engineering by Mahendra Raj.

In the early 1950s, the Province of Bombay gifted 80000 square yards of land to the Cricket Club of Ahmedabad (CCA) to construct a stadium. The land was handed over to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation at a token price. The mayor of Ahmedabad Sheth Chinubhai Chimanbhai, commissioned master architect Charles Correa and one of India’s top structural engineers Mahendra Raj to build the stadium and the Sports Club of Gujarat building. The stadium was completed in 1966.

The stadium was mainly used for first-class cricket matches like the Ranji Trophy but an important historical event was the first one-day-international between India and England on 25 November 1981 at this ground.

With limited resources available in the 1960s, the stadium was completed by Charles Correa and Mahendra Raj using innovative methods. Thin folded plates rise from the ground to form an integral whole with the spectator stands and the 20 meter long cantilever roofs. Besides cricket matches, it has hosted many other events.
