Amdavad ni Gufa is an excellent example of collaboration between an artist and an architect. Master architect Balkrishna Doshi designed this subterranean structure that houses the murals of the late master artist, Maqbool Fida Hussain.

During the early-1990s, the design of this unusual gallery was begun by the architect. The domes are made from ferro-cement and these are covered with china mosaics to deflect the sunlight. Snake-like forms are painted on the shells. The diffused light falling on Hussain’s murals inside are reminiscent of the ancient cave temples.

Walking in the underground space under the cement shelled domes offers an opportunity to see Hussain’s murals and tribal style artworks. In the same complex, the Herwitz Gallery is the venue for temporary exhibitions and has a book counter selling art-related books. There is also a café attached to the amphitheater used for performances and events from time to time.
