Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) is one of the highest-ranked business schools in India. IIM-A is also an architectural landmark designed by Louis Isadore Kahn, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.

After the independence of India, a need was felt by national leaders for institutions that train leaders and managers for new businesses, companies and corporations being set up in the country. The first Indian Institute of Management was started in Calcutta (Kolkata) and soon after that IIM-A was built in 1961.

Eminent citizens of Ahmedabad like Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Vikram Sarabhai took the lead in establishing IIM-A, which took the model of Harvard Business School. The logo is inspired by the intricate traceries of the filigreed stone screens of the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque in the old city.

IIM-A occupies a sprawling campus with a new extended campus on the opposite side of the road. The academic buildings are centres on the Louis Kahn Plaza. The western wing has classrooms and the eastern wing has offices, with the library connecting the two wings.

The classrooms get good airflow and much natural light because they are organised around courtyards. Brick arches with concrete beams are a distinctive feature of the brick-and-concrete academic building.
