The Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur is dedicated to the worship of Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu.
A Sadhu is said to have built a modest shrine to Maruti or Hanuman at this site. His successor Sarangdas built the Jagannath Temple in the mid-15th century.
The temple complex has a kitchen that gives free food to the needy, a dharamshala, and an ayurvedic centre. You may get to see elephants as well as cattle from the gaushala in the complex. The temple is best known as the staging post for the Rathyatra, which is one of the largest of its kind in western India. It is held on the same date in June-July as the larger Rathyatra of Puri and Kolkata. Elephants lead the cavalcade that has the chariot carrying the triad of idols of Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.
The Ahmedabad Jagannath Temple has blessed Amdavadis for 450 years. And it has an exciting story to it. According to the legends, once a priest named Shri Sarangdasji was resting at the Jagannath temple at Puri when, suddenly, he was greeted by Lord Jagannath in a dream who instructed him to build a similar temple in Ahmedabad.
