Shantinathji ni Pol is a good specimen of a traditional residential area (Pol) of the walled city with well-preserved structures, some fine havelis and a chabutra (bird-feeding structure). Towards the rear of the pol, the Shantinathji Derasar is a much-visited Jain temple.
Shantinathji Derasar is said to be more than 400 years old but most of the present structure dates from the early 20th century when it was renovated.
Walk through the pol to see the façades of heritage houses. Towards the back of the pol you can see the marble temple on a plinth with five sets of columns connected to each other with toranas. Sculptures of dancing girls decorate the columns.
This temple was once largely a wooden structure, before it was heavily renovated. The wooden ceiling is unique among Jain temples as are the wooden statues inside.
Lord Shantinath is the sixteenth tirthankar (spiritual pillars of the dharma) out of twenty four who gave up his throne as a Chakravarti Samrat (imperial king) to become a monk. The Shantinathji Temple is regarded as the resting place of Lord Shantinath which radiates strong positive energy.
